A Nelson Thanksgiving Tradition

GRATITUDE CARDS!

Every Thanksgiving I serve our traditional Thanksgiving meal.   We’ll change it up with a new side dish or dessert, but for the most part, we’ve had the same meal forever!

Just some of those menu items:  Sweet Potato Casserole (gluten free), corn casserole, garlic mashed potato casserole &  of course, turkey & ham (with syrup sauce)!

For dessert, I made my  Trifecta Pecan Pie with homemade salted caramel ice cream & Connie’s Caramel Sauce.  Also, we would not have Thanksgiving without my Fudge Pie & Pumpkin Pie with freshly whipped cream.

We also have a few non-food related traditions too.

I’m excited to share a Nelson Thanksgiving tradition we started last year when Kristin gave me a sweet packet of “Gratitude” cards.

In the past, we would share what we’re thankful for  by going around the table.  Bill and I have been doing this since our kiddos were little.   We love having friends join us for Thanksgiving, so they’re part of our traditions, as well!

Here’s how it works: we write down what we’re thankful for  & put them in tiny envelopes.   We shuffle and pass them around the table.   Everyone takes one to read & tries to guess the author.   Friends, trust me…we know humor at the Nelson Home.  Some of the notes are absolutely hilarious.

We keep the cards in a large wooden bowl that sits in our living room.   What a great reminder all year long of Thanksgiving & Friends!

I cherish these memories and love our new Thanksgiving tradition.   It was fun comparing Marco’s handwriting this year versus last.   Big improvement!  🙂

Do you have some food and non-food traditions?  I would love to hear them.

    Connie and Kristin,
I have truly enjoyed browsing your site. It is so beautifully arranged, the tips so helpful, stories, so interesting and precious. Anne and I are trying your recipes, she has gluten intolerant friends to bake for, so this is perfect. Thanks for adding delight and joy to our world!
